The commercial driver’s “Defensive Driving” course designed by Training Associates is extremely flexible. The basic program is 8-hour but can be presented in shorter, specific topic segments or with expanded segments depending on the needs of the client. The “Pre-Trip Inspection” is such a segment; this segment can be done in approximately 2-hours as classroom only, or expanded to 4 hours with classroom and some hands-on, or up to 6-hours with classroom and extensive item by item hands on coverage. The time depends on the size of the class and amount of practice time requested. The other segments require 4-hours and deal with the basics of defensive driving. This includes signs, signals, road markings, speed limits, seatbelts, and other safety equipment. Interactive discussions of driving situations and proper procedures will cover following distances, stopping distances, backing, proper turns, and blind spots as well as other topics. The remaining segments cover air brakes, multiple units, specifics on securing cargo, carrying passengers, log hauling and applicable Federal Regulations. Segments are included or excluded based on the clients’ needs. They can also be presented as two hour stand-alone courses.
